OpenAI’s ChatGPT can retain information through an optional Memory feature and, through a separate option, refer back to earlier conversations. Launched online on 30 November 2022, the service now presents owners of connected homes and yachts with a practical information-management question: which details should a conversational assistant be allowed to carry from one task to another?

What happened

ChatGPT’s personalisation has two distinct elements: users can ask it to remember specific information, and they can enable an option that draws on previous conversations. For a residential technology project, this could make recurring discussions about room requirements or owner preferences more convenient. It does not make the resulting conversation an approved project record.

The distinction matters because ChatGPT accepts text, audio and images. A discussion need not contain a complete specification to reveal something sensitive: a photograph of a plant room, a spoken explanation of an access problem or a copied service note may each supply part of the picture. Information review therefore needs to extend beyond uploaded documents.

OpenAI also allows users to opt out of having their chat data used to train forthcoming models. That addresses a different question from whether information remains useful in later conversations. Owners and their advisers should not treat personalisation, training consent and project record-keeping as interchangeable controls, or assume that changing one resolves every concern about the others.

There is a concrete historical reason to scrutinise what enters the service. In March 2023, a bug exposed some users’ conversation titles to other users. OpenAI subsequently disclosed that the incident also exposed personal and payment-related information, including names, email and payment addresses, card expiry dates and the final four digits of card numbers.

The background

ChatGPT is a cloud-based conversational service built around large language models, rather than a dedicated building-management platform. Its capabilities include summarising and translating text, writing and debugging software, and responding to image inputs. These functions can assist the work surrounding an installation without establishing the assistant as an authoritative source on the installation itself.

A luxury residence typically produces several kinds of information with different audiences. An owner’s description of preferred lighting is not equivalent to a security contractor’s access documentation; a cinema equipment list is not equivalent to network credentials. Applying one sharing rule to all four would overlook the different consequences of disclosure.

Memory introduces an additional consideration: a detail supplied for one purpose may become relevant to a later response. Continuity is useful when the detail is a stable preference, such as wanting discreet equipment. It needs closer supervision when the detail describes a temporary fault, an unfinished design or an arrangement that has since changed.

ChatGPT can produce plausible but incorrect answers, a limitation commonly described as hallucination. Remembering a user-supplied statement does not independently verify it. If an early discussion contains an incorrect equipment designation, subsequent advice still needs to be checked against manufacturer documentation and the installed system, rather than accepted because the conversation appears consistent.

Web access does not remove that distinction. ChatGPT Search was introduced between October and December 2024 to help the assistant retrieve more current information. As with using ChatGPT Search for home technology research, finding a current product page and confirming the configuration inside a particular property remain separate tasks.

The same boundary applies to project paperwork. A conversational account of a system can omit revisions, substitutions and commissioning decisions that explain how it actually works. The issues explored in ChatGPT Work and home technology records make a controlled handover record especially important when AI-generated material enters the documentation process.

What people are saying

OpenAI presents Memory as optional and provides a separate choice about recalling earlier conversations. Those choices give users a way to tailor continuity, but they are not evidence of a purpose-built confidentiality arrangement for residential integrators or yacht managers. The available information does not establish a specialist approval for either application.

During the March 2023 incident, OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman initially said that users could not see the contents of other users’ conversations. The later disclosure of exposed personal and payment details demonstrated why the scope of an incident matters. A reassurance about message content should not be read as a statement about every category of account information.

For owners, the likely attraction is avoiding repeated explanations of the same brief. An assistant that retains preferences could help maintain consistency when discussing several rooms or properties. The sensible boundary is to preserve the useful preference while withholding identifiers, access arrangements and other details that do not improve the answer.

For integrators and captains, the more consequential issue is authority to share. Having access to a client’s drawings or service history for maintenance does not, by itself, settle whether those materials should enter another service. A project-specific policy should establish who can authorise that step and which information must first be removed.

What happens next

The available facts do not establish a dated rollout of a dedicated ChatGPT memory product for luxury homes or yachts. This is therefore a governance decision around an existing general-purpose tool, not an announcement of a new control system. Any proposed deployment should begin with its intended task, rather than with an assumption that every available feature should be enabled.

An appropriate first step is to classify the proposed input. Broad aesthetic preferences and anonymised room requirements may support useful drafting work; passwords, alarm codes and remote-access credentials should stay out of general conversations. Where a technical identifier is genuinely necessary, the person responsible for the system should decide how it is shared.

A second step is to separate client work in the working process. Staff should avoid casually mixing several households’ requirements within the same continuing discussion, and review the applicable account settings before relying on remembered context. This is a recommendation for reducing ambiguity, not a claim that a particular account configuration guarantees isolation.

Information also needs an owner when circumstances change. A refit, equipment replacement or change of crew can make previously accurate context obsolete. The maintained installation record should remain the reference against which an assistant’s output is checked, with a named person responsible for reviewing any AI-assisted instructions before they reach an owner or service engineer.

If the workflow later expands from conversation to external tools, another review is necessary. ChatGPT integration permissions concern what a connected service may access or do, whereas memory concerns conversational continuity. Approving a drafting assistant should not automatically authorise access to operational systems, email accounts or purchasing functions.

Why this matters

For a private residence or superyacht, useful personalisation does not require unrestricted disclosure. The practical opportunity is to give ChatGPT enough context to assist with briefs, explanations and routine drafting while keeping sensitive operational knowledge in controlled records. Owners should expect their integrators to explain that boundary as clearly as they explain network access or remote maintenance: what information is shared, who approves it and who remains accountable for checking the result.

Questions answered

+What is ChatGPT memory?

ChatGPT’s optional Memory feature lets users ask the assistant to retain specific information. A separate option allows it to refer back to earlier conversations.

+Can ChatGPT remember previous conversations?

Yes. ChatGPT offers an option to draw on earlier conversations, separate from the feature through which users ask it to remember particular information.

+Can I stop ChatGPT using my chats for training?

OpenAI allows users to opt out of having chat data used to train forthcoming models. That choice should be considered separately from conversational memory and project record-keeping.

+Should I put smart home passwords into ChatGPT?

Passwords, alarm codes and remote-access credentials should stay out of general conversations. Share only the context needed for the task, with sensitive technical information subject to approval by the person responsible for the system.

+What happened in the March 2023 ChatGPT data incident?

A bug exposed some users’ conversation titles. OpenAI later disclosed exposure of personal and payment-related details, including names, email and payment addresses, card expiry dates and the last four digits of card numbers.

+Does ChatGPT memory make its answers more accurate?

Remembering information does not independently verify it. ChatGPT can generate plausible but incorrect answers, so installation-specific advice still needs checking against manufacturer documentation and the maintained project record.

+Can ChatGPT replace smart home installation records?

It should not replace the maintained installation record. Conversations can omit revisions, equipment substitutions and commissioning decisions, while remembered details may become outdated after a refit or system change.
