OpenAI’s ChatGPT has moved beyond standalone conversations through connections to external tools and servers, including Model Context Protocol support introduced in September 2025. The connected apps were renamed plugins in July 2026, bringing renewed attention to a practical question for luxury homes and yachts: what information and authority should a conversational assistant receive?

What happened

ChatGPT’s support for Model Context Protocol, or MCP, allows connections to third-party tools and servers when enabled in developer mode. For custom integrators, the important development is the connection mechanism rather than the conversational interface: an assistant can work with resources outside the information contained in its underlying model.

That is not evidence of a ready-made building-management solution. The capabilities described do not establish a certified KNX interface, a supported marine-control installation or guaranteed compatibility with any particular residential automation platform. Each proposed connection still needs its own technical assessment; a common protocol does not establish what a connected service can safely do.

OpenAI had previously introduced plugins in March 2023, including web browsing, code interpretation and services from Expedia, OpenTable and Zapier. The later adoption of MCP adds another stage to that development. Integrators assessing a proposal should therefore ask which connection technology and supported functions it actually uses, rather than accepting “ChatGPT integration” as a complete specification.

Customisation is a separate capability. GPT Builder, released in November 2023, lets users tailor ChatGPT’s behaviour for particular purposes. The GPT Store followed in January 2024 with more than three million user-created GPTs. A customised assistant and a connection to external equipment solve different problems: instructions shape responses, while tools determine what information or actions are available.

The background

ChatGPT launched on 30 November 2022 as a conversational product based on large language models. It can now accept text, audio and image prompts, and its capabilities include translation, summarisation and writing or debugging software. Those functions give it potential uses in an integration business before any connection to an occupied property is contemplated.

For example, summarisation could help turn a lengthy equipment manual into an initial briefing, while translation could support communication between an owner and a multilingual project team. These are proposed applications of documented capabilities, not validated installation workflows. The original manual and an appropriately qualified reviewer should remain available wherever an error could affect commissioning or operation.

Search addresses a different limitation. ChatGPT Search was deployed between October and December 2024, allowing the assistant to retrieve web information beyond its training cut-off. That can help with finding current documentation, but a search result still needs checking against the exact equipment generation, software version and regional specification installed in a property.

Deep Research, introduced in February 2025, extended that research function into reports based on extensive web searches. Its initial implementation took between three and 30 minutes per report. This is a different operating rhythm from a wall keypad or lighting processor: research latency may be acceptable for a design comparison, but not for an immediate room-control command.

The distinction sits within the wider question of where artificial intelligence belongs in a smart home. Language models are useful candidates for interpreting requests and assembling explanations. That does not make them substitutes for the deterministic logic, feedback and commissioning on which dependable building operation rests.

What people are saying

OpenAI’s product choices indicate an emphasis on making ChatGPT useful beyond answering questions. GPT Builder supports task-specific behaviour; MCP supports external connections; and connected productivity tools make additional information available to the assistant. Taken together, these developments invite integrators to consider a software interface to project information, rather than merely a general-purpose chatbot.

Owners are likely to judge that interface by whether it gives a useful answer about their own property. A general explanation of heating controls is different from identifying which thermostat serves a particular bedroom. The latter requires accurate installation records and an authorised route to them; fluent language cannot supply missing knowledge of the building.

For integrators, the commercial question is whether a connection reduces work without creating a larger support obligation. A narrowly defined assistant that retrieves approved instructions has a more containable role than one allowed to modify settings across several systems. The permissions offered by each connected tool therefore deserve as much attention as the quality of the assistant’s responses.

Captains and estate managers would also need a clear distinction between remembered preferences and operational records. ChatGPT offers optional memory and the ability to refer to earlier conversations. Those features should not be assumed to provide a controlled maintenance history, an approved settings register or a dependable handover record between members of staff.

There is a documented reason to treat account access carefully. In March 2023, a ChatGPT bug exposed some users’ conversation titles; OpenAI subsequently reported exposure of certain personal and payment details. That incident does not establish the security of today’s connectors, but it illustrates why uploading confidential estate or vessel information requires a separate data-handling decision.

What happens next

The available information does not announce a dedicated luxury-home or superyacht rollout, an installation price or a commissioning timetable. A prospective deployment should therefore begin with a defined use case, not an assumption that the wider platform’s development provides a supported residential product. Useful procurement questions include who maintains the connector and which changes would trigger retesting.

A cautious first evaluation would limit the assistant to approved, read-only material. The test should establish whether it can identify the correct document, distinguish between similar devices and acknowledge missing information. This builds on the issues raised by using AI with home technology records, without granting authority to alter a live system.

Verification needs to test errors as well as successful answers. ChatGPT can produce plausible but incorrect information, and its training data can contain bias. For a property-specific assistant, an evaluation should include superseded manuals, ambiguous room names and equipment absent from the records, with reviewers checking whether uncertainty is made explicit.

Any later permission to perform actions requires another assessment. OpenAI’s agent features can undertake multi-step computer tasks, but that is not equivalent to verified physical control. Our examination of ChatGPT agents and smart-home control limits explores that boundary; for building services, the separate division of responsibility between KNX and BMS remains relevant.

Why this matters

For owners and integrators, ChatGPT plugins create a potential route to making complex technical information easier to use. The specification should nevertheless identify the documents the assistant may read, the tools it may invoke, the actions requiring approval and the person responsible when an answer is wrong. In a prime residence or yacht, the valuable feature is not unrestricted access: it is a useful interface whose authority has been deliberately bounded.

Questions answered

+What are ChatGPT plugins?

ChatGPT plugins connect the assistant with additional tools and services. OpenAI first introduced plugins in March 2023; connected apps were subsequently renamed plugins in July 2026.

+Does ChatGPT support MCP?

OpenAI added Model Context Protocol support to ChatGPT apps in September 2025. When enabled in developer mode, it allows connections to third-party tools and servers.

+Can ChatGPT control a KNX smart home?

The capabilities described do not establish a certified KNX interface or guaranteed compatibility with a residential automation platform. Any proposed connection requires a separate technical assessment.

+What is the difference between a custom GPT and a plugin?

A custom GPT tailors ChatGPT’s behaviour for a particular purpose. A plugin provides access to additional tools or services. Customised instructions alone do not establish a connection to equipment.

+Can ChatGPT find up-to-date equipment information?

ChatGPT Search can retrieve web information beyond the model’s training cut-off. Results still need checking against the installed equipment’s generation, software version and regional specification.

+Can ChatGPT make mistakes when reading technical documents?

ChatGPT can generate plausible but incorrect answers. Technical summaries should be checked against original documentation, particularly where errors could affect commissioning or operation.

+Is ChatGPT memory a maintenance record?

ChatGPT offers optional memory and access to earlier conversations, but these features should not be assumed to provide a controlled maintenance history or an approved register of system settings.
