OpenAI rolled out ChatGPT Search between October and December 2024, enabling its conversational assistant to consult the web for more current answers. For luxury-home owners and custom integrators, the consequential change is where technology research begins: a generated response can become the first draft of a project brief, making its underlying evidence important long before equipment is ordered.
What happened
ChatGPT Search added web retrieval to a service originally released on 30 November 2022. Rather than relying solely on information absorbed during model training, ChatGPT can look online when answering a question. That addresses one limitation of language models: their training data stops at a particular point and cannot, by itself, establish what has changed since.
The distinction matters when researching equipment availability, subscription requirements or support arrangements. A contemporary web page may contain information absent from a model’s training data, but finding that page does not establish that its contents apply to a particular installation. A UK project, for example, needs evidence relevant to the product version and market being specified.
OpenAI also allows businesses to tailor how their content appears in ChatGPT Search and influence which sources are used. This makes company-published material part of the discovery process, not merely something an integrator consults after drawing up a shortlist. It does not establish that a prominently represented product is independently tested or suitable for a particular residence.
For project teams, the practical output should therefore be more than a conversational recommendation. A useful research record identifies the proposed product or service, the claim being relied upon, the supporting page and the date it was checked. Those details allow another person to inspect the reasoning without reconstructing an entire chat.
The background
Web access did not arrive in ChatGPT as a single development. OpenAI introduced plugin support in March 2023, including browsing and code interpretation alongside third-party services. Search subsequently made finding information on the web a more direct part of the assistant’s offering, increasing its competition with established search engines.
In February 2025, OpenAI added Deep Research, initially using its o3 reasoning model to produce reports through extensive web searches. Those reports originally took between three and 30 minutes. That is a separate proposition from obtaining a conversational search answer: Deep Research’s role in home-technology shortlists concerns a longer research exercise, rather than treating every answer as a completed investigation.
Residential technology research has several different evidential needs. A product announcement can establish that a manufacturer has introduced something; a technical manual can describe supported connections; a service agreement can define continuing obligations. Collapsing those documents into one fluent response risks obscuring which kind of evidence supports each statement.
A manufacturer’s compatibility statement is also narrower than a complete system design. It may confirm an interface without resolving how several services behave together, how faults are reported or who provides support. As with Google Search and home AV compatibility checks, discovery helps locate candidates; it does not replace testing the proposed combination.
ChatGPT can still produce plausible but incorrect information, a limitation commonly described as hallucination. Web retrieval gives it access to additional material rather than removing that risk. In a project document, an unsupported inference should remain an open question, not acquire the status of a requirement simply because it appears beside accurate product details.
What people are saying
The owner’s likely attraction is a simpler way to express a requirement. Asking for discreet music throughout a house or a cinema that accommodates gaming is more natural than beginning with component terminology. The integrator’s task is to translate that preference into measurable requirements, including room coverage, source selection and the behaviour expected from the controls.
For manufacturers, OpenAI’s provision for tailoring search presentation makes clear product documentation commercially significant. A page that distinguishes regional availability, optional functions and required accessories gives researchers more useful material than a broad promise of seamless operation. That is an implication of the search model, not evidence that any particular supplier receives preferential treatment.
Integrators are likely to read an AI-generated shortlist differently from an owner. A recommendation may identify an interesting option while omitting installation depth, servicing access or an accessory needed to achieve the requested function. These are concrete design questions to return to the supplier, rather than reasons to dismiss conversational research altogether.
The commercial context should remain visible without assuming that every answer is an advertisement. Businesses shaping their search presence and paid advertising are different mechanisms. The distinction complements the questions raised by ChatGPT advertising and home-technology advice: project teams need to understand the basis of a recommendation before treating it as impartial selection advice.
What happens next
The available facts establish the Search rollout, not an announced home-integration certification programme or a timetable for one. Owners should not interpret the ability to find information about a control platform as evidence that OpenAI has validated an installation using it. Any project-specific assurance must come from the parties responsible for designing, supplying and commissioning the system.
A sensible next step is to separate research from approval within the project workflow. ChatGPT Search can help assemble questions and candidate suppliers; a named designer or integrator should then review the evidence before a product enters the specification. This preserves a clear decision-maker when an attractive option proves unsuitable for the building.
That review should be proportionate to the consequence of being wrong. A mistaken finish description creates a different problem from an incorrect assumption about alarm integration or essential power. Teams can prioritise verification by asking whether each claim affects appearance, cost, interoperability or a safety-related function, then assigning it to the appropriate specialist.
Documents also need version discipline. Where a supplier changes a web page, the research trail should still show what information supported an earlier decision. Keeping dated copies of relevant technical documents, subject to their usage terms, helps distinguish a later product change from a mistake in the original brief.
At procurement, unresolved questions should travel with the shortlist rather than disappear from a polished presentation. Examples include whether a quoted function requires a paid service, whether the specified variant is available locally and whether continuing support is included. A supplier’s written response can then close each question before an order creates a financial commitment.
Why this matters
For a prime residential project, the value of ChatGPT Search is not that it can produce a persuasive equipment list quickly, but that it can help an owner ask better questions before design decisions become expensive. The lasting asset should be a brief whose claims can be checked, whose uncertainties are visible and whose approvals belong to identifiable people. That gives the eventual installer and service team something more durable than a convincing conversation.
Questions answered
+What is ChatGPT Search?
ChatGPT Search allows OpenAI’s assistant to search the web when answering questions, giving it access to information beyond its model training data.
+When did ChatGPT Search launch?
OpenAI rolled out ChatGPT Search between October and December 2024.
+Can ChatGPT Search recommend smart-home technology?
It can help research candidate products and suppliers. Recommendations still need checking against technical documentation, regional availability and the requirements of the proposed installation.
+Does ChatGPT Search stop hallucinations?
No. Web retrieval provides additional information, but ChatGPT can still generate plausible inaccuracies. Claims used in a project specification need supporting evidence.
+What is the difference between ChatGPT Search and Deep Research?
Search brings web retrieval into conversational answers. Deep Research, introduced in February 2025, generates reports through extensive web searches; its initial reports took three to 30 minutes.
+Can businesses influence ChatGPT Search results?
OpenAI allows businesses to tailor how their content appears in ChatGPT Search and influence which sources are used. This does not establish independent testing or suitability for a particular home.
+What should an integrator keep from ChatGPT research?
Keep the proposed product or service, the claim being relied upon, its supporting page and the date checked. Record unresolved questions and the person responsible for approving the final specification.
